I think I know the answer to this, but was hoping someone could answer definitively from personal experience.Player X is at AAA this Season 1, making $57k.
At the end of Season 1, he is demoted to Rookie level.
He is also removed from the 40-man, if he was there in the first place.
After rollover, at the start of Season 2, what is his salary?

I hate word problems...

i think it should still be 57 k,

Yeah, I think we're being tricked. Maybe he's looking for $0, since odds are the player will retire. Not always, but most of the time.

But if he doesn't retire, doesn't he still get credit for another year's service? $59K?

i think it would be $8K and brent is looking for confirmation from someone who has actually done this.

I don't think a players salary goes down once they reach AAA. Their salary remains at $54,500 because I have demoted players to rookie and their salary is $54,500.

I strongly believe this is the correct answer.

Well, no way does it revert to $8K. I've found a bunch of players in Low A or RL that I'd demoted and they always kept their High A or AA salaries. I haven't found any from AAA, though. I've done it, but I can't ever recall a player not retiring.

I think players automatically resign at the highest base rate they've had up to 55k, unless they're on the 40, which gives them that % raise, or an automatic promotion to the AAA pay scale.

Well, we've covered all the options, at least. A couple of you mentioned demoting a guy and not having the salary decrease - it certainly does not decrease in the current season, once you have a certain salary, you can only have it increase, not decrease within the season. That's not necessarilythe case, however, for future seasons, at least in every circumstance.Take, for example, George Hill. I acquired him off waivers in S5, when his salary was roughly the ML minimum ($343k). Towards the end of the season, he was demoted to AAA. After rollover, when his contract was automatically renewed, it was for only $62k.Likewise, in S6, he was promoted to the ML at one point and so got an in-season pay raise. I believe, however, he again ended the season in AAA. Upon rollover, he again had his contract automatically renewed for only $62k (not the $300+k he had been making the year prior). After spending all of S7 in AAA, his contract was renewed for S8 at a modest increase to $65k.So, at least with respect to demotions between ML and AAA, it is possible for a player to have his contract renewed at a pay "cut" from the previous season. The question remains, however, whether it works the same way for a demotion from one minor league level to another. deanod, I take it you are not someone who has actually done it then? Too bad, it would have been very nice to get an actual example from an owner who had.jsturgis5866, would it be possible for you to link a player that you demoted from AA or High A to Rookie ball, but who had their contracts renewed the following season at AA/High A levels? Or were you thinking about *in-season* paycuts (which I agree, simply don't exist)?chazzzzzz, your comment really caught my attention, if only because it adds another variable that I hadn't considered. Where did you get that impression from? Do you have a player you can link to that had his contract renewed at $55k+ even though he began the new season at Rookie/Low A level?

I've two roster filler 55K guys on the RL roster for rollover - both retired. I do know that until recently, if you accepted the return of a Rule 5 guy he got paid the season after return $327K. So, never accept the return of a Rule 5 guy.

I hope someone can show me a player card with the answer to brent's Q.

if he doesnt retire it will remain 57k
9/6/2009 6:02 PM
or if he doesnt leave as a 6 year minor league FA
