I’LL GET YOU, MY PRETTY! Topic

The thread has been hijacked. Poaching is not wrong. It is strategic and perfectly legit. That is also not the point of the thread.

Back to the original question: has anyone actually seen someone threaten revenge, and then follow through with it? Personally, I have not.

With my higher prestige teams I'm always on the lookout for smart, aggressive coaches from nearby lower prestige schools who are willing to challenge me for recruits and are a danger to develop their programs to where they could rival/hinder mine. I hate those guys. While it's foolish to publicly vow revenge, I've tried/am trying to keep certain programs "in their place" by taking a recruit from them every two or three seasons. It's not something I send them sitemails about though.

94% of the time at D3 there is a player of similar value/ skillset to take "for cheap" instead of going after someone who is already considering someone else.

For me, I never, ever thought about it as poaching and I don't do any real recruiting until the day of signings. If there is someone super close by who I know I want to lock up and sit on (and have people scared to try to poach him because I have money and high prestige) then I might jump on them on day one-- but most of the time I'm doing recruiting around signing period. Sometimes there is a weaker school and if someone is close enough I just take him.

There is nothing sketchy about this at all. You are being a ***** if you think otherwise. Never spread yourself thin, always make sure you have enough resources and you will not put yourself in a bind like this.

I just poached a guy and had the coach send me a sitemail vowing revenge. After a couple friendlier sitemails back-and-forth, it's now all good.I've thought about going after people who tried to poach me (I almost always have a crap ton of money in reserve, so I'm the wrong guy to try to poach ... you hear that, people?), but I haven't because a). I calm down and forget about it and b). it's usually not in the best interest of strategy. (Though pottle's example is a smart and interesting one where bigger picture strategy is in fact being employed.)I did see it happen in the Big Ten Allen ... chinchilla (a first-cl*** jack***) was at Michigan State and (very predictably) tried to snipe a conference mate's recruit. The snipe attempt failed, chin ended up with a bunch of walk-ons, was ultimately banished to Radford and then out of Allen. So the story has a happy ending.

No.

The failed poach where the guy has absolutely no chance of getting the recruit from you is actually more annoying. A couple seasons ago I had a local pf considering me, and a school with D+ prestige from clear across the country tried to come in on him. He had, quite literally a 0% chance of signing the guy. But it was annoying as hell because it forced me to shove additional money in that would been better spent elsewhere (coughpoachingsomeoneelsecough), and also made it look to outsiders like I had another battle going. I just don't understand what sort of math/logic some of these guys are employing when they decide to go after a recruit like that. Very annoying.

i can't stand poachers who recruit after the first cycle. don't they understand that by being home at 6pm and spending money during that cycle that i have called dibs on any recruit you see my name on? furthermore, my prestige shouldn't matter, even if you have a 2-grade advantage or more...go find your own recruits!

As you sow, so shall you reap..... And for the record blaank, I never once said what you did was wrong. It is a perfectly legit recruiting method and I certainly don't fault anyone for doing it. What I did say is that I will remember it and repay you for it every chance I get.

By the time my prestige is high enough to poach any of you big boys this post will be long forgotten. I however will remember and will strike when the time is right.

I've silently sworn to avenge the loss of a recruit a time or two -- but I've always held back on publicly or via sitemail saying anything about it.

Then after a few weeks it's the next recruiting cycle, and while vengeance is still on my mind, by the time I've gone through the available recruits and looked at my needs and set my targets, it's gone from priority #1 to about #37.

Pretty soon after that it's a new season and another recruiting cycle, and I can't be bothered to see my vendetta through anymore.

So no, I've never gone through with it myself. I've never actually noticeably seen it done by anybody else either I think.

Yeah, I have a few coaches on "the list" who have irritated me in the past, but whenever I have a chance to poach one of their guys they don't seem to be recruiting anyone I'd want. In the end I'm just going to do what's best for my team in the long run. Probably that means there a few people equally annoyed with me for my recruiting.
