I’LL GET YOU, MY PRETTY! Topic

I have a "list" that has about 5 guys on it. Each one is there for a different reason. (said list has no world-specific-boundries either).25% carry-over means nothing to me. (read what you want into this). However, I have no problem what-so-ever with a legit poach, and will do the same if needed. Just one of many stratagies in recruiting. But, that being said, a couple of those names came from recruiting battles gone bad, in which someone came in very late and took my kid after I had spent alot, then rubbed salt in the wound of a lesser prestige team.Interestingly enough, I have a list as mentioned above that I look for a chance to quietly work on certain people that I deem need it... but I also have a short list of others I look for a chance to even the score on... (Ironically, OR is on that list). On another account, I had just landed in DI and had probably a D prestige... had put about half my buget into a great looking 2* kid... LOL, and in the cycle prior to signing,,, after he had considered only me for 24 hrs or more... OR dropped in and signed the guy in 2 cycles... I was truely devastated... I had several Titles on that account in DII and DIII, so I believed I knew what I was doing, but had never tasted the slap in the face from an A prestige / Big-6 team until then. Now don't get me wrong,,, OR actually taught me a huge lesson by doing that and I have the utmost respect for him as a coach,,, however, he really gimped my team, basically as an after-thought, for a kid who would never play more than 10 mins for him. I quietly made a note at the time that someday... I will be in a position to hopefully return the favor

My first season at Providenc in Phelan I ahd 6 open scholarships and tons of cash... I was going to bring in the best cl*** EVER.I signed one uber stud who turned out to be the best player I ever signed (didnt get drafted somehow)I wasnt sniped by them but I lost battles to robs_wife (fregoe/tracyr), wallshot, and some guy at a small school. Then mniven came in late on I guy I was on and got him from me.So I took 4 walkons, would have been five but I did a desperation promoised start to some scrub who I cut the next season.I have never learned so much from a recruiting period before then. It changed how I recruit..

But it was annoying as hell because it forced me to shove additional money in that would been better spent elsewhere (coughpoachingsomeoneelsecough), and also made it look to outsiders like I had another battle going. I just don't understand what sort of math/logic some of these guys are employing when they decide to go after a recruit like that. Very annoying.

Well said. When this happens I always scratch my head and think wtf?

I sometimes wonder when higher prestige teams do this too, when the two teams are both in the A range and one jumps in on a recruit they clearly can't win.

Sometimes I just don't understand.
The degree to which some coaches are willing to blow up their own teams to try and win a battle, even one they have no chance of winning, never ceases to amaze me.

lol ......over $100K to spend and all he got was 3 crappy recruits.Personally, I've had a vendetta against a certain Smith ACC ***** coach who poached a recruit out of my back yard about 10 seasons ago!!! I'd never <turtle> name names, but as soon as he <turtle> stops making to the final four and loses his A+ prestige, I'm coming after him!!!!Seriously, revenge recruiting sucks. The best thing poaching does is teach you a lesson on how to protect against it for future seasons.

I would guess I have played more d1 seasons than anyone, I also would guess I have been poached and have poached just about as much as anyone, simply due to my number of total seasons.I used to keep a list and make good on it, I never posted about any event which would cause a coach to make a list. These days I am just like mully, I more worry about what I did to cause the poach than anything. Sometimes, one has to take consolation in simply being in the right fight, win or lose.I govern my recruiting by a few things that I watch for, but I definitely look for overextended coaches and or value opportunities around signing time if I have money & scholies available. I often look at my conf mates recruiting, and if someone is battling them, I will pick on the interloper and help my conf mate, IMO a strong conf is one of the best defenses vs poaching in high level d1.But, while reading this and the other post by tanner, I must say d1 recruiting is set up to be highly confrontational, and it is only going to get worse, when ratings are devalued, especailly if other recruiting changes are implemented, allowing for more long distance recruiting.

Someone just poached my guy in Gonzaga and I thought I was going to hold a grudge about it. Then the number 6 center magically became undecided a cycle later and I signed him. How lucky.
