Yes. The last election comes to mind.....I don't care very much for the beatles. I also don't like the Dave Matthews Band, anything Jazz, Country, and most rap. All of those things are wildly popular, and I can't for the life of me understand any of them. Elvis falls in the same category. I don't think it has so much to do with musical virtuosity as it does conveying a feeling. When you listen to rap or jazz or 60s (er stuff) it makes you feel a certain way and for some, brings back memories. If you aren't interested in feeling the way rap, jazz, country, or the beatles makes you feel, then you won't find it attractive unless the music overwhelms you. I think the mark of musical greatness is in making the audience want to feel something they've never wanted to feel before. Like listening to a particularly brilliant piece of cl***ical music that gives you goosebumps and stirs emotions you didn't realize you had given that you aren't generally interested in that genre. A big test for whether music has that mark or not is the test of time. Will the Beatles still be popular when the baby-boomers die off? I doubt it. Could be wrong, but they seem very era-relative to me. The Beatles were probably good or great or super-great for their time, but apart from bringing back some memories and making you feel a certain way, I can't really see how their music even cuts par with more evolved modern music. Someone posted that making good music isn't just about writing something as difficult as possible, but writing something catchy, although simple, can be genious. And I agree with that. Relative to their time, they made some catchy anthems. Its also easy enough to see how their music is linked in the modern musical evolution. Without them, I'm sure the music we have today would have taken longer to evolve. So I can appreciate them in that regard. I just won't be tuning in to an oldies station anytime soon. :)

No one can deny the influence the Beatles had on music and culture at the time. They were "bigger", relatively speaking, than anyone/anything we've ever experienced in pop culture since. You can compare other artists' music/writing/popularity/sales, but I don't think anyone person or band has or ever will be able to touch them as far as cultural impact. The Stones, Dylan, Michael, U2, Springsteen, Madonna, no one since the Beatles did what they did. They may have sold more records, or made more money on tour, but no one aside from Elvis had the impact they did. This is mainly due to the time in which they appeared on the scene (both Elvis and Fab Four). Times were different then, there was no one like them that preceded them. They were the first of their kind to blow up HUGE, and there was no precedent for what affect they had on America, and the music world. No one (besides Elvis) had ever been so popular. Whether you like, love, or hate their music, there's no arguing that they were originals, never to be matched, culturally. And the music was pretty damn great too.

I don't know if they were "talented" on a sheer technical level or not... but seems to me anyone who can make music that appeals to as many people as theirs did, at a time when there was little to no marketing/promoting (relative to the untalented skanks who are popular in today's oversaturated world; see: Spears, Britney or Cyrus, Miley) must be pretty damn talented overall.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of their music. I do love some of their stuff (Elanor Rigby, I Am The Walrus, While My Guitar...), but just watched the first 2 hours of "Beatles: Anthology", and was bored to tears (Only watched cuz the g/f was watching it). That kind of 60's pop music just doesn't do anything for me. I respect it, but just don't care for it much.

So yah, they're cl***ic, they're one of a kind, they're cultural icons, they started it all, blah blah blah... But too much of anything is too much, and I'm already feeling the Beatles overkill just walkin through Target.

All that said, my g/f's teenaged daughters are HUGE Beatles fans, and we're getting the game this weekend. I love playing RB 2, have downloaded tons of songs in addition to what comes on the game, I'm looking forward to seeing the Beatles graphics (have seen reviews that say they're incredible, and will probably enjoy playing some of the songs on guitar/b*** the first time thru... but I am quite sure I'll be completely sick of hearing ANYTHING Beatles related within 48 hours. THANK GOD for football season and basement TV's.

(Side note: Does anyone know if the Rock Band for Wii instruments work for the Guitar Hero games? I've been wanting to get GH: Metallica, but not buying all new instruments for just that game. I know that GH:M uses a different set up for the drums/cymbals, but have heard that you can still play with RB's drums... have heard conflicting reports about the guitar/mic. Thanks.)

m-fan, Guitar Hero controllers do work for BRB. I'm sure the reverse is true.

thanks muddy... I keep hearing different things, but for the Xbox or PS3.. no one I know has actually tried it on the Wii, which is what we have. Even the guys at GameStop give me conflicting answers.

I should probably try to rent it, and just figure it out.

No, but it helps (especially with rhythm) more than it hinders. I've played intruments long before I ever picked up a gutiar hero thingy, but I could sense that someone who had never played the real deal might want to after playing the game.
I also think it gets kids interested in music. My 5th grader just started band and loves GH. When we were at the music store picking up his instrument, my 4yr old, who also plays GH pretty well, saw a ukelele and thought it was a guitar his size. He loves strumming it and I am trying to give him online lessons (since I have never played guitar). I know GH had a role in their interest.

To say it is thievery from Delta Blues shows that you don't even really understand Delta Blues, or the 60s Rock 'n Roll twist which they put on it (i.e., created). Many scales, predominant riffs and melodies cross, but they are not used in the same way. I saw a show on VH1 a few years back where they were interviewing Billy Joel and he commented on how he was in an elevator one day and heard a very familiar melody, recognized it as his own song (can't remember which one, but it was an 80s poppy one), elevator-ized, then had an, "OH, SH*T!" moment when he realized it was actually Bach. Did Billy Joel steal that pop song from Bach? Clearly not, but each piece of new music has elements of other music in it.And the Beatles didn't just dominate music, (14 songs on the top 100 at one point in 64), they changed the style of what was considered popular music (call it pure "Pop", that's fine). Check out the Billboard top 200 in 1962 or 1963 and then in mid to late 1964. See anything different?I would post my personal top 20, but it would likely turn into a top 200 or so (there are bound to be 5-10 songs that I could put on the "don't like" list). I will say that agree that While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Clapton is one of the best.
LOL so now they created rock and roll too? Good one. Good thing that Buddy Holly and Mr. Berry aren't reading this thread.

WOW! Who can argue with that!!Boy did I enjoy that. Brings me back.eminor you really know music and can argue with that? We can't all like the same thing but you have no respect for that? Come on guy, get real. And whoever said The Beatles will die with the Baby Boomers is wrong. After a generation who did not love the Beatles, it's very clear that the young people today have discovered them and love them.

They are not actually playing their instruments in that video. They are pretending to while a studio rec plays. This was common practice in the early 60s but by 1968 it was dead unless of course you were the Beatles.

What's your point? Did they not record the music? It's a video for God's sake.
