Well, we've covered all the options, at least. A couple of you mentioned demoting a guy and not having the salary decrease - it certainly does not decrease in the current season, once you have a certain salary, you can only have it increase, not decrease within the season. That's not necessarily
the case, however, for future seasons, at least in every circumstance.Take, for example,
George Hill. I acquired him off waivers in S5, when his salary was roughly the ML minimum ($343k). Towards the end of the season, he was demoted to AAA. After rollover, when his contract was automatically renewed, it was for only $62k.Likewise, in S6, he was promoted to the ML at one point and so got an in-season pay raise. I believe, however, he again ended the season in AAA. Upon rollover, he again had his contract automatically renewed for only $62k (not the $300+k he had been making the year prior). After spending all of S7 in AAA, his contract was renewed for S8 at a modest increase to $65k.So, at least with respect to demotions between ML and AAA, it is possible for a player to have his contract renewed at a pay "cut" from the previous season. The question remains, however, whether it works the same way for a demotion from one minor league level to another. deanod, I take it you are not someone who has actually done it then? Too bad, it would have been very nice to get an actual example from an owner who had.jsturgis5866, would it be possible for you to link a player that you demoted from AA or High A to Rookie ball, but who had their contracts renewed the following season at AA/High A levels? Or were you thinking about *in-season* paycuts (which I agree, simply don't exist)?chazzzzzz, your comment really caught my attention, if only because it adds another variable that I hadn't considered. Where did you get that impression from? Do you have a player you can link to that had his contract renewed at $55k+ even though he began the new season at Rookie/Low A level?
