I read one post that said that Recruiting has gone from being ridiculously easy in Year 1 of Beta to being brutally difficult now…
However, even with the infamous "Red Light" restriction on D3 coaches, I am still of the opinion that Recruiting can be too easy for D3 programs.
This past season, I didn't even bother spending Attention Points on D3 players. I signed three D2 players with decent potential at the start of Period 2 and one D1 player as soon as the final 24-hour window opened.
Signing players above your own Division should be possible; however, I feel that it should be a much rarer occurrence and a D3 Coach should really be taking a RISK when focusing on these recruits because there should be a decent likelihood that he/she could come up completely empty in the process.
Therefore, I believe that the element that needs fixing the most is the SIM Recruiting logic. I have noticed that numerous recruits are being pursued by 8-10 SIMs for long periods of time while other, seemingly-comparable, recruits attract no initial attention at all. This tells me that: 1) most (all?) SIMS use similar logic in selecting the initial recruits that they target; and 2) SIMs do not change their focus/strategy rapidly enough in light of the competition they are facing. Not only does this result in many opportunities for a human-controlled D3 schools to target D1 and/or D2 caliber talent without initial opposition, but also makes it hard for those D3 schools to get overtaken when the D1 or D2 SIMs finally change their direction late in the game.
If a human can see the futility of staying in a battle with 9 other teams, many of which have higher prestige ratings (or other factors), why can't a SIM act the same way and "test the waters" on other targets? Either that or have SIMs spread out their Attention Points over a greater number of targets early in the game so that they have some contingency plans in place.
