How far out should my recruiting line be? 500 miles? or is that too far for d1 schools?

start out much closer - with weak prestige you will want to find guys who you want who are closer to you than they are to teams with better prestigeI'd stay within 350 miles for sure and in fact if you can stay within 100 you probably increase your chances of successStart with the easy stuff and if you succeed reach further

that 360 mile circle is the key one.

After you p*** 360 the costs are relatively unchanged all the way up to 1400-1500 miles. Something along the lines of costs at 1400 miles being about 15% more than those at 360.

on a sidenote; not all 360's are created equal. A huge difference between 358 miles rounded up to 360, and 362 miles rounded down to 360. A home visit jumps over $300 for that couple miles.

It also depends where you are in the country. 360 is important on the coasts I am sure, but on the great plains, it isn't as important, since there are so few human controlled schools in CO, WY, KS, NE, OK, NM, AZ, MT etc.
