Wismetrics - Batting
Every stat in this section is a house statistic. None of them are official MLB statistics, and none are used outside this site -- they are our own definitions, worked out from league stats each time the Leaders page loads and stored nowhere. A stat with nothing to divide by reads "----" rather than zero.
| Stat | Description |
|---|---|
| WIS-WAR | A weighted score built from H, 2B, 3B, HR, BB, RBI, SB, CS and outs made. Despite the name it is not real WAR and does not line up with it -- the weights are ours. For reference, an elite full season is around 11, an all-star year around 8, a solid regular around 4, and a bench player under 1. The same figure the Player Values page shows |
| CLUTCH | A weighted score for driving runners in: 0.5 x (RBI with 2 out / RBI) + 0.3 x (RBI / H) - 0.2 x (LOB / AB), multiplied by 100 to make it readable. An elite season is around 33, an average one around 24, and under 15 is poor. A hitter who drives in almost nobody can go negative |
| XBH% | Extra base hits per at-bat ((2B + 3B + HR) / AB) |
| XBHH | Extra base hits per hit -- how often a hit went for extra bases, as a percentage ((2B + 3B + HR) / H). The pitching XBH% is the same ratio seen from the other side |
| BPH | Total bases per hit ((1B + 2x2B + 3x3B + 4xHR) / H) |
| eBA | Effective batting average -- times on base over plate appearances not given away on a sacrifice fly ((H + BB + HBP) / (PA - SF)) |
| K% | Strikeouts per plate appearance (SO / PA). Lower is better |
| BB% | Walks per plate appearance (BB / PA) |
| FBHR | Fly balls per home run (FB / HR). Lower means more of a hitter's fly balls leave the yard |
| PPHR | Pitches seen per home run (NP / HR). Lower is better |
| RBI% | Runners driven in as a share of those left on base (RBI / (RBI + LOB)) |
Wismetrics - Pitching
House statistics again -- our own definitions, not official MLB ones, derived when the Leaders page loads. K% and BB% use batters faced here, where the batting versions use plate appearances.
| Stat | Description |
|---|---|
| WIS-WAR | A weighted score built from IP, SO, H, BB, HR, W and SV, then scaled to sit on the same footing as the batting figure, so an ace and an MVP-calibre bat land in the same place. Despite the name it is not real WAR -- the weights are ours. For reference, an elite full season is around 11, an all-star year around 8, a solid regular around 4, and a bench player under 1 |
| CLUTCH | A weighted score for run prevention and high-leverage work: 0.45 x (1 - ER/IP) + 0.25 x (SO/IP) - 0.15 x (BB/IP) - 0.1 x (HR/IP) + 0.05 x (SV / (SV + BSV)). Every term is a rate, so the result is then weighted by workload -- full credit from 200 IP up, tapering to 55% for a pitcher with almost none -- and scaled so an elite starter lands level with an elite RBI bat on the batting table, then multiplied by 100 to make it readable. An elite season is around 33, an average one around 24, and under 15 is poor |
| K% | Strikeouts per batter faced (SO / BFP) |
| BB% | Walks per batter faced (BB / BFP). Lower is better |
| XBH% | Extra base hits allowed per hit allowed ((2B + 3B + HR) / H). Lower is better |
| PC3 | Pitches per inning (NP / IP). Lower is more efficient |
| BRINN | Baserunners allowed per inning ((H + BB + HBP) / IP) -- WHIP plus hit batsmen. Lower is better |
| FBHR | Fly balls per home run allowed (FB / HR). Higher means fewer fly balls leave the yard. Reads "----" for a pitcher who has allowed none, which is the best possible record rather than the worst |
| OBIP | Outs recorded per ball in play ((Outs - SO) / (FB + GB)). Strikeouts are excluded because they are not balls in play |
| HR% | Home runs per hit allowed (HR / H). Lower is better |
| GB% | Ground balls per batter faced (GB / BFP) |
| FB% | Fly balls per batter faced (FB / BFP) |
